How R3 compares products side by side

Every product on R3 is scored with the same research-backed method, so head-to-head comparisons measure the same thing across every category. We grade three pillars: safety (the materials, chemicals, certifications, and recall history that affect what your family is actually exposed to), efficacy (whether the product does what it claims, based on independent testing and verified specs rather than brand copy), and usability (how it behaves in a real home, including ergonomics, cleaning, noise, and durability after months of use).

When you pick two or three products in the same category, the comparison view lines them up against the same pillar weights, same scoring rubric, and same evidence requirements. A difference of one point isn't a tie-breaker; it's a signal that one product clears a real evidence bar the other doesn't. We surface where the gap is so you can decide whether that gap matters for your household.

What “safer” actually means in our reviews

Safety isn't a vibe. For every category, we publish the exact criteria we score on: which third-party certifications count, which chemicals trigger point deductions, which recall patterns disqualify a product entirely, and how we weight independent lab testing versus self-reported manufacturer claims. Two products that look identical in marketing can score very differently once you control for what's verified.

Comparisons also flag the trade-offs marketers usually hide. A product can score high on safety and lower on efficacy because it sacrificed performance to be non-toxic. Another can score high on usability but lose points on safety because it's easier to clean only because it relies on a coating we don't recommend long-term. The point of a side-by-side isn't to crown a single winner; it's to make those trade-offs visible before you buy.

    How to read a comparison

Start with the pillar your household cares about most. If you're comparing baby bottles for a newborn, safety almost always outweighs usability. If you're comparing air fryers, efficacy and cleaning ergonomics may matter more than small safety deltas between two already-certified models. Comparisons work best inside a single category — comparing a stroller to a car seat tells you nothing useful, because the scoring criteria aren't the same. Inside a category, the comparison is apples-to-apples by design.

Every score on every comparison links back to the underlying review, the citations behind each deduction, and the methodology page for that category. Nothing is held back behind opaque badges. If you disagree with a score, you can see the exact criterion that produced it and follow the evidence trail yourself.
