The Vinyl and Lead Problem
Soft lunchboxes need to be pliable, waterproof, and cheap to manufacture. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) checks all these boxes. Unfortunately, PVC is one of the most toxic plastics available, requiring phthalates to make it flexible.
Even worse, consumer watchdog groups consistently find elevated levels of Lead on the zippers and inner linings of cheap insulated bags imported from overseas.
Section Summary
- Soft vinyl bags are frequently made of toxic PVC.
